Hip replacement: anyone had one?

I'm going to need one of these, due to a combination of too much sport as a youth, and bodged NHS diagnosis & treatment.

The doctor showed me X-ray of what a hip replacement looks like. Call me a coward, but I might prefer to put up with the pain for a while longer rather than have some great metal spike driven into my femur..

Feedback please from anyone who's had one.

I would email Andy Carroll, he must have had at least one replaced in his long list of injuries down the years? ;-)

I've had both hips resurfaced.
The first was about 10 years ago after a couple of years of pain and lots of physio.
I managed to play football again after the first one but had to have the second one done about 18 months later.
I played a few games (old bastard's stuff) after the second but then my knees started to give out.
The recovery was pretty quick (you're up walking the day after the op) and rehab probably took about 6 weeks - the first time with crutches and the second with just a walking stick.
The resurfacing gives you a lot more mobility than the complete replacement.
I do a lot of walking (play golf several times a week (on foot) and [*touches wood*] have no problems so far.

At least I know if mine do wear out, it won't be due to overuse in the sporting arena.

Good advice Ronald, but I'm one for natural hip replacements and I don't want to miss the experience.

My dear old nan Gladys gawd bless had one in her early 80's, on the waiting list for 3 years! Was in great pain and begged the doctor to have it done, finally 'twas done with no problems and she had a pacemaker.

Think they were reluctant due to her age thought it would kill her, but she was hard as nails, grandad had died years earlier, but she soldiered, couldn't sit still, always worked, they were half right as a couple of years later she was up on steps painting the ceiling, think she overdid it as went to bed that night and woke up with a fatal heart attack.

Ask them to give you an anaesthetic beforehand.

My old dad had one at the age of 70. Ten years ago now, great success and still moving around well

Had one in july. Well worth it. Great scar and, with a bit of physio, virtually no pain. A lot better than the arthritis, necrosis I had to deal with before

My brother (47) had one last year. he was extremely fit, so recovered pretty quickly. It was marathons that exacerbated the condition to where he needed it. he cannot run distance anymore because the repetitive impact will mess up the implant, but he cycles a great deal. His pain is gone and seems fine with it. hope that helps.

Left hip replaced four weeks ago today and just had my first day back at work today too. I am 49 and mine was caused by a steroid treatment I had as part of chemo over a decade ago which essentially killed part of the bone - avascular necrosis. Even now I already have much better mobility than before the op. The kids are already expecting great things from my return to football.

Chigwell, something else to consider-
Lots of people, me included, have put stress on other joints due to protecting a painful hip.
I struggle a bit with my knee cos of this so if it needs doing, don't wait too long.

Had mine done 4 and half years ago age 50. Joint had next to no cartilage and was bone on bone, very painful despite the strong painkillers.
Look into resurfacing first, they don't cut the femur, just cap off your worn out joint.
If you get 20 years from that and it needs a revision, it's like having it done for the first time when you need full hip replacement as the bone is intact.
There's a ton of bad press about resurfacing but the BHR device has great results if done right.

Uncle had one about 2 years ago, recovered quickly and is much more able to walk around without getting pain.

Had mine replaced with a wad of twenty pound notes. No change though.
